A Breath of Fresh Air to the Historical Fiction Writing in Telugu
Worldwide, historical fiction has been a very popular literary genre. The width and the size of English readership and the financial returns for a successful work of fiction allow the writers to undertake extensive and thorough investigation of background. Vernacular markets do not provide adequate rewards to justify such time and money consuming research. Understandably, it is rare to find a novel, written in a vernacular that is based on in depth understanding of the historical setting. In this background, Sai Papineni’s Āndhranagari – Song of the Black River comes as a breath of fresh air. The book, based on the Andhra Empire that had flourished in the early historical times from the third century BCE to its gradual decline in the seventh century CE, was launched yesterday symbolically at the feet of the gigantic statue of Buddha surrounded by the waters of Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad. Mr. Maganti Rajendra Prasad, Chairman of the Soma Group had unveiled the volume in front of a gathering of prominent citizens, litterateurs and media. He said, “The book is a result of exhaustive research, an effort rare in these days. It’s a laudable undertaking by Mr. Sai Papineni to spread the awareness of the glorious past of our people through this popular literary medium. I felt compelled to support such a noble cause. I wish him success and I am sure that Āndhranagari would create a feeling of pride in our cultural past among millions of Telugu people.” The pivot of the novel is the gradual dismembering of Amaravati Stupa in the hands of antiquarians, amateur archaeologists and civil servants since its discovery by the modern man in late eighteenth century. Their attitudes and actions leading to the transfer of this art treasure to various museums around the world – and incidentally creating a greater awareness of the Amaravati School of Sculpture in the western world – leaving a desolate mound at the site as a reminder of what had been a glorious metropolis that had flourished for a millennium. The author travels in time narrating the story of the civilization of the Krishna River – its inception, glory and the inevitable decline – through the lives of a profusion of characters that come alive from the depths of time. The geographical canvas of the narrative is vast, straddling the internecine politics of the Flavian emperors of Rome, the struggles of the nascent empire of Tang China and the mercantile emporia of the Indian Ocean, but never deviating from the story line that portrays the Andhra Civilization in all its glory. The novel is a ‘must read’ even to those who have no serious interest in history, for the simple style and the joie de vivre of the characters.
